Hurling [page 7]
Cavan Gaels Hurling club was formed under the chairmanship of Tommy Kelly on March 14th 1982. In the following year, 1983, the Senior team won the senior double and in 1984, the Centenary year of the G.A.A., the senior championship was retained. These teams were mostly comprised of players originally from traditional hurling counties. At this stage, efforts were made to introduce the skills of the game to the youth of the town but they were unsuccessful.
In the mid nineties, another attempt was made to revive hurling in the town under the guidance of Wexford man Tom Walsh. In 1997, we won the clean sweep of underage titles in hurling and we represented Cavan at the All Ireland Féile na nGael (Under 14) which was held in Waterford. In 1998, we had big representations on both the Cavan Minor and Under 16 hurling panels, the latter of which was narrowly defeated in the All Ireland 'C' Under 16 final.
When Tom Walsh's employment took him away from home during the week, underage hurling coaching in the club ceased. Even though this is some underage hurling in other parts of the county, Cavan Gaels, as far as hurling is concerned, is inactive at the present time.

Handball
Cavan Gaels Handball Club only came into being in 1980 even though handball was handball was a very popular sport in the town from the time the open handball alley was built in the late 1950's until the smaller alleys became popular. This step showed the willingness of the club to grow and expand and become a G.A.A. club in its totality.
Spearheaded by the famous Sheridan brothers Greg and Dominic and Maurice Brady, handball thrived and the aforementioned had great success both at club and county level over many years. Unfortunately no coaching structure was put in place to introduce the next generation to the skills of handball and so the only opportunity the youth of Cavan town get to play handball nowadays is if they are students of St. Patrick's College where there are two indoor handball alleys.
Both Dominic and Greg Sheridan have won many All Ireland titles and continue to play handball at the highest level in the Masters grade. This is an indication of the tremendous dedication both have displayed over the years to be still able to play at such a standard.
In the last few years, three former St. Patrick's College students and present day Gaels footballers, Conor Rabbitt, Kevin Downes and Sean Johnston have had considerable handball success at both colleges and county level.
Club lotto Syndicate
In 2001 the club embarked on a new fund raising venture, a Club Lotto Syndicate tied into the bi-weekly National Lotto draws. The Syndicate, now in its third year, continues to be a great financial bonanza for the club, even though we have not hit the jackpot yet.
This year, we are playing two sets of nine numbers and one set of seven numbers, which are shown in the table below. All possible combinations of six numbers from each set are covered in each of the bi-weekly Lotto draws. There are 175 lines altogether ( 84 in Play 1, 84 in Play 2 and 7 in Play 3). As a guide, if at least three numbers plus the bonus are picked in any draw during the life of the current Syndicate (March 19 2003 - March 17 2004), then the members share in some winnings.
