A Brief History of Cavan Gaels

Underage Football [page 4]

In any history of Gaeil an Chabháin, a special place must be given to the De La Salle Brothers who from their introduction to the town in the early 1940's, had played a major role in promoting among their pupils a love of Gaelic games and none more so than Brother Cyril who was team manager of Cavan Gaels when they won their first Senior Championship in 1965. The football successes achieved by De La Salle in schools football competitions over the years were phenomenal and were the result of the excellent football tuition (i.e. coaching) provided for the youth of Cavan town by the De La Salle Brothers.

When the Order departed in the early 1970's, they were a tremendous loss to the G.A.A. in general but particularly to Cavan Gaels. Eventually, the club realised that they had to become pro-active in the coaching sphere if they wanted to ensure a strong club in the future. This occurred in the early 1980's under the leadership of the then underage Chairman Tony Looney.

Coaching at underage level (from about 6 years of age upwards) continues to be a priority in the club and it has reaped dividends many times at county, provincial and national level.

Until 1983 Under 16 and Minor football was parish based and except for a number of years in the 1960's when Oliver Plunketts was the name of the parish Under 16 team, they used the name of Cavan Gaels. In the early 1980's, Cavan Gaels decided to go it alone at Under 16 and Minor levels such was the popularity and success of their coaching endeavours at underage level.

Under 12
Under 12 football was first introduced to County Cavan in 1970 but the club's first success at this grade was not until 1990. We then appeared in every final until 1996 winning five titles (1990, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1996). We won again in 2002 and 2005.

Under 13
Cavan Gaels were the inaugural winners of the Under 13 League (Roinn A) in 1996. In August 2002, we won this competition for the second time.

Under 14
Cavan Gaels have achieved constant success in the Under 14 competitions particularly during the 80's and the 90's. A highlight of our activity at this level was the All-Ireland Féile double successes in 1996 and 1997.

Under 16
As with Under 14, Cavan Gaels have tasted success at Under 16 level, particularly during the 80's and the 90's. In fact, we won the Under 16 League five years in a row (1996-2000).

Minor
Cavan Gaels minor successes go back to the 60's, continue through the 70's and into the 80's. But it was the 90's and the early years of the new millennium which saw the Club achieve exceptional success at Minor level. When Cavan Gaels annexed the Minor Championship in 2002, they were doing so for the fifth year in a row (1998-2002). This era also saw the club win the prestigious St.Paul's Ulster Minor competition in 1999 and the Ulster Under 17 competition in 2000.

Coaching
The bedrock of the club's success has been the highly organised coaching sessions for the youth of the club particularly on Saturday mornings. The club is fortunate that it always had among its members many talented football coaches who have been very generous with their time in the interests of the club. This consistent coaching is still taking place and is still bearing fruit.

In 1992, a team representing Cavan Gaels won the All-Ireland (Under 10) Community Games final in Mosney. And indeed many of these same players went on to achieve further underage success with the club, culminating in 2001 with the winning of the County Senior Championship, the Senior League and the Under 21 Championship.
