Cavan Gaels GAA Club was founded in 1957. It came into existence after a meeting held in the Town Hall, Cavan Town on February 11th 1957 which voted out of existence the two old town clubs, Cavan Harps and Cavan Slashers, neither of whom were strong at the time, in favour of a new club to be known as Cumann Gael an Chabháin (Cavan Gaels).

Prior to this meeting, a letter appeared in the Anglo Celt calling on all players and supporters of the game to come to a meeting to discuss the state of football in the town and ways of arresting the obvious decline in standards.
